Djurs Sommerland, has announced a major investment of over DKK 100 million for the 2027 season, with the debut of Europe's tallest and fastest Hot Racer roller coaster.
Named Midgårdsormen (the Midgard Serpent), the new attraction will also mark a milestone as the first roller coaster in Djurs Sommerland to feature inversions, turning guests upside down for the first time in the park's history.
The new ride will be the only one of its kind in Denmark and the wider Northern Europe region, the only other in Europe being MAHUKA at Walibi Rhône-Alpes in France.

The new themed roller coaster will serve as the anchor attraction for a 15,000 m² expansion of the existing Vikingeland area. Reaching a top speed of 75 km/h, the ride will feature two launches, three inversions, and a specially designed layout spanning 603 metres.
A Milestone for the Park
"This is the first time our guests will be turned upside down on a roller coaster here. It is a milestone and at the same time a significant evolution of our coaster lineup, as we introduce an entirely new ride type," said CEO Henrik B. Nielsen.
Midgårdsormen will become the park's 10th roller coaster, further strengthening Djurs Sommerland's position as the Nordic amusement park with the largest and most diverse collection of roller coasters.
Innovative Single-Rail Design
Developed in collaboration with Liechtenstein-based manufacturer Intamin Amusement Rides, the Hot Racer design differs significantly from traditional roller coasters. Guests travel in a train with a single seat per row along a single, larger rail. This unique configuration allows for faster directional changes and a more dynamic, intense ride experience filled with rapid transitions and moments of weightlessness.
Despite its intense characteristics, the ride is designed as a family thrill coaster. With a minimum height requirement of 120 cm, it aims to appeal to a broad demographic. "We have focused on combining intensity with broad appeal. That makes it an experience many people will dare to try, again and again," Nielsen added.

Expansion of Vikingeland
The addition of Midgårdsormen comes alongside a broader, highly themed expansion of Vikingeland. Visitors can expect new dining experiences, a large playground, and a new retail shop. The park has also indicated that the area could be expanded with further attractions in the future.
The existing family roller coaster, Thors Hammer, which opened in 2002, will remain a central feature of the newly enhanced land. "We are building on an area that guests already love. This is an upgrade to the entire Vikingeland experience," noted Nielsen.
Norse Mythology and International Collaboration
The concept and theme are inspired by Norse mythology, where the giant sea serpent hidden beneath the ocean suddenly sets the world into motion. The ride experience aims to translate this legend through unexpected movements and dynamic shifts in direction.
To bring this vision to life, Djurs Sommerland partnered with the Dutch design firm Leisure Expert Group, a long-term collaborator of the park for more than a decade. "We work strategically to develop our experiences together with some of the best experts in the industry. This ensures that we deliver high quality while creating something that stands out," said Nielsen.
The DKK 100 million project represents a key step in Djurs Sommerland's long-term strategy to enhance the resort's appeal, encouraging longer stays and repeat visits. "Our most important measure of success is achieving the highest guest satisfaction. Everything we develop must be something our guests can truly feel," Nielsen concluded.
