Djurs Sommerland, one of Scandinavia’s largest family theme parks, has officially pulled back the curtain on its next major investment.
Arriving in 2027, Midgårdsormen (The Midgard Serpent) will serve as the centerpiece of a massive expansion to the park’s popular Vikingeland (Viking Land).
The new ride is rumoured to be an Intamin Hot Racer single-rail roller coaster, but this has not yet been confirmed by the park.
A Viking Kingdom Reborn
The project represents one of the most significant expansions in the park's history. According to park officials, Vikingeland will grow by 20,000 square metres. To put the scale into perspective, this new area is:
- Larger than the park’s immersive Dinosaurland.
- Three times the size of Bondegårdsland.
The expansion is designed to be a natural extension of the existing Viking themed land, creating a cohesive and immersive environment for guests.
The Legend of Midgårdsormen
While the specific ride type remains a closely guarded secret, the name Midgårdsormen refers to the colossal sea serpent of Norse mythology that encircles the world.
The park's official teaser video describes 'an ancient force trembling beneath the surface' and a 'colossal power preparing for battle'.
While the exact ride specifications haven't been released, the park has confirmed a minimum height requirement of 120 cm, suggesting a family-thrill attraction that will appeal to both older children and adults.
More Than Just a Ride
The 2027 expansion isn't just about the headline attraction. The new 20,000-square-metre area will also feature:
- New themed kiosks and dining options.
- A dedicated souvenir boutique.
- Various 'points of sale' and guest facilities to support the increased capacity.
Construction Timeline
Work on the site began immediately after the 2025 season concluded in October. Currently, the park is focused on ground preparation and foundation work. Construction of the ride itself and the surrounding thematic elements will intensify later this year and continue throughout 2026 to ensure a grand opening in Spring 2027.
