Parque Warner Madrid is one of the most popular theme parks in Europe, with unique rides and attractions themed to blockbuster movies.

During the weekends of March and April, the most heroic season of the year returns: Mes de los Superhéroes.

We went to check out everything that it has to offer, and experience all of the rides, attractions and shows.

Shortly after the park opened, at the end of the impressive Hollywood Boulevard, we enjoyed the lively Welcome Show. A joyous performance featuring some of the park's most popular characters. This set the mood for the day, a park that's full of fun and energy.

The first area for us to explore was Movie World Studios, so we took a mini classic car for a trip to California's top sights on the Cine Tour. This is an enjoyable family ride, with sets representing locations such as Muir Woods and Santa Monica Pier.

This part of the park looks particularly impressive.

Next up, we were heading behind the detailed street sets to the back lot, to ride the extreme inverted coaster Stunt Fall. A rarity with only five operating in the world, and this is the only one in Europe. A forceful vertical drop into a 110 ft (33.5 m) tall cobra roll and a 102 ft (30 m) tall loop before ascending the second tower and going into reverse for a second vertical drop and through the inversions backwards. We loved it!

Other attractions in this area of the park include the Yogi Bear themed 'splash battle' water ride, Oso Yogi, and the suitably spooky Hotel Embrujado 'madhouse' dark ride inspired by the supposedly haunted Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles. Both are good versions of these types of attractions.

Crossing over into DC Super Heroes World we first entered Metropolis, anchored by SUPERMAN: La Atracción de Acero, and completed by the Daily Planet Restaurant and Metropolis Boutique.

SUPERMAN is a gigantic floorless coaster featuring 7 inversions, and we opted for front row seats where the views were incredible. Seeing the twisted track coming before you and passing right under your feet is quite a thrill. It's unbelievable that there are only two coasters of this type in Europe. With a whopping 3,609 ft (1,100 m) of track and a top speed of 62 mph (100 km/h) this is a brilliant ride.

Next door in Gotham City, the imposing BATMAN: Arkham Asylum inverted coaster sits amongst a well themed park and buildings. Descending from a height of 105 ft (32 m) and reaching speeds of 50 mph (80 km/h) through 5 inversions, all whilst your legs dangle freely. On our first ride we opted for the front row, then went back on to try the optional virtual reality experience.

We've done lots of VR coasters now, and this was by far the best. Firstly there is no additional charge, secondly it has been restricted to a couple of rows to minimise delays, and thirdly the graphics and sequencing were absolutely spot on. Unless it's done really well, we're not a fan of virtual reality on big roller coasters, but thankfully this is exactly how it should be.

The thrills were coming thick and fast at this point, so what better than a powerful vertical launch to 328 ft (100 m) then back down at a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) on tower ride La Venganza del ENIGMA. The combination of three towers really enhances the ride experience, as you hurtle past other riders going in the opposite direction. If you keep your eyes open, there are wonderful views of the park.

After a spot of lunch at the Gotham City Grill (which was very fast and efficient thanks to the digital ordering screens) we were off to our next themed area, Old West Territory. As we arrived, a performance of the new street show Wild West Live! was about to begin so we took a moment to enjoy the song and dance routines before exploring further.

Temperatures were now soaring, so this was the perfect time for the Rio Bravo water flume. Set against a dramatic rocky backdrop, this excellent water ride features not only a 20 m (66 ft) drop into the lake, but behind that backdrop there are some surprises! A great backwards camelback drop takes riders into a canyon with an Indian settlement, ghost town and graveyard, before entering the mine itself.

The other main rides in this area are the wooden Coaster-Express (currently closed for re-tracking) and the standard water flume Cataratas Salvajes which seems superfluous given the excellent Rio Bravo sits so close to it.

The other highlight for those brave enough is the highly detailed Expedientes Warren: Pasaje del Terror. This walkthrough experience is based on horror films such as The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Nun. It is definitely worth the €5 extra, with great sets and lots of scare actors.

At this point in the day we returned to DC Super Heroes World for the incredibly popular Gotham City Stunt Show, where Batman faces off against The Joker with the help of Robin. A mixture of fight scenes and aerial acts entertains the crowds with motorbike stunts, a quad bike and of course a Batmobile all making an appearance. This entertaining show was only let down by the poor viewing area, which requires standing on level ground.

Mes de los Superhéroes also includes the DC Superheroes training academy, meet & greet opportunities and face painting. There is so much going on throughout the day, it's a challenge to see it all!

It was now time for us to explore the final area of the park, Cartoon Village, which is home to characters from Looney Tunes, The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry.

Our first ride here was the CORRECAMINOS Bip Bip family coaster, a surprisingly good ride packed with sharp drops, sudden twists and tight turns. Coyote sits proudly on the front of the colourful trains, of which there are two so that queues are kept short. For the target audience, it's perfect. For adults, the location tucked around the back of unthemed buildings and other structures slightly detracts from it, as it was added to the park in 2009.

Rápidos ACME was next on our agenda, a really enjoyable water ride featuring the Loony Tunes characters and with plenty of opportunities to get wet! The factory-themed queuing space is really nicely done, building up anticipation for the ride.

Our final stop in Cartoon Village was La Aventura de SCOOBY-DOO, an interactive dark ride where riders shoot at targets amongst UV painted backdrops. Definitely one for children.

Getting an evening meal was a little tricky (given that it is the quiet season, so many restaurants were closed), but after a quick snack we took advantage of the late opening hours (until 9pm) for some rides in the dark. Another front row ride on the illuminated SUPERMAN: La Atracción de Acero was the perfect last ride.

We then had just enough time to get a place along the route of the park's Celebration Parade, and a brilliant finale to our day. The colourful procession of floats and characters during Mes de los Superhéroes includes the Looney Tunes dressed as superheroes, as well as further appearances from Batman, Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern and now Wonder Woman.

The atmosphere was fantastic as everyone joined the end of the parade and followed it back to the entrance to the park.

We thoroughly recommend visiting Parque Warner Madrid during Mes de los Superhéroes.
